Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI)
was established in 2000 with the support of leading business personalities. BEI is headed by President and CEO Mr. Farooq Sobhan, former Foreign Minister. BEI is mandated “to promote, articulate and influence policy issues and measures of crucial importance to the development of a market oriented economic regime enabling the unfettered and smooth growth of trade, commerce and industry.” Mr. Sobhan has offered to use BEI’s resources to help NFP adapt and introduce its curriculum here through the Scolastica School and other partners. Canada
Cyberswirl Solutions
is a Toronto for-profit information technology firm specializing in communications tools for nonprofits. Its leaders Shaheen Mohammed and Amin Tejpar and their team bring their IT skills together with graduate level training in Muslim studies, science, education and other disciplines learned at Columbia University in New York. Cyberswirl is available to develop NFP’s course content, as well as online teaching and learning platforms.(www.cyberswirl.com)
Egypt (proposed)
The Egypt International Economic Forum
has indicated interest in efforts to build understanding between Egyptians, Americans and Europeans, and to present the deeper historical reality of Muslim civilizations to global audiences. EIEF is allied with the World Economic Forum in Davos (www.eieforum.org). Through EIEF, we have begun partnership conversations with several nonprofits and organizations about delivering NFP's various learning modules in Egypt.
France
In July 2005, NFP was invited by the French Ligue de l’enseignement to proposed educational programs to convey a broader understanding of the achievements of Muslim civilization. The Ligue was founded in 1866, and brings educational and cultural programs to 2 million French citizens. (www.laligue.org)
India
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)
was born during the Indian movement to independence, in response to a call by Mohandas Gandhi in 1920. The University now has over 11,000 students, more than 600 teachers and about 1000 non-teaching staff. The University has many centres of learning, from nursery schools to faculties and research centres. JMI is in the process of setting up five new research centers: a Jawaharlal Nehru Centre, a Centre for the Study of Comparative Religions and Civilizations, a Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies, a Centre for West Asian Studies, and a Centre for Spanish and Latin American Studies. As perhaps the leading modernist Muslim educational institution in India, JMI has multiple educational links and networks with India’s more than 80 million Muslims. Vice Chancellor Dr. Mushirul Hasan has voiced a personal interest in our project. (www.jmi.nic.in)
Indonesia
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta
Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, Rector of the State Islamic University (UIN) in Jakarta, has offered to collaborate with NFP, through the University and its national and international network of partners, on all aspects of our program, including curricula, books and multimedia projects. Prof. Azyumardi speaks and writes frequently on Islam, tolerance and coexistence. He also serves on the international board of The International Centre for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP), founded in 2003.The principal goal of ICIP is to build a network of Islamic NGOs and progressive-moderate Muslim activists and intellectuals (www.azyumardiazra.com, www.uinjkt.info/www-ina/default.asp, www.icipglobal.org/www.ui)
Jordan
Injaz
is the largest youth-oriented organization in Jordan and has received extensive support from Queen Rania al Abdullah. Based in Amman, its activities focus on business oriented courses for youth, and it reaches about 26,000 youth nationwide. Injaz has worked extensively with foreign donors including the U.S. Department of State and U.S. A.I.D., and has committed to helping NFP adapt and introduce its curriculum to Jordanian and other Arab students. Pakistan
Women and Development Association (WADA) and Developments in Literacy (DIL). WADA was founded and is now headed by leading poet and feminist Fahmida Riaz. Based in Karachi, WADA has published books on gender issues, held workshops on tolerance, contributed to curricula and textbooks, and used literature and poetry as ways to deal with deeper cultural issues. WADA has also held workshops and written books on issues like sexual abuse of women and Muslim women writers. DIL was founded by concerned Pakistani-Americans to combat rising illiteracy in Pakistan, and delivers free education to 10,000 students at a network of 200 schools throughout the country. DIL has now completed its expansion program, and is focusing on teacher training and curriculum improvement. (www.4dil.org)
United States
The University of New Mexico with its main campus in Albuquerque is New Mexico’s leading public liberal arts university with more than 30, 000 students and an annual budget of US$1.3 billion. UNM offers all the standard academic departments, as well as a nationally-ranked School of Medicine and School of Law, and adds special strength in Education, Anthropology and Latin American Studies. UNM has offered to cooperate with NFP on student exchanges, cultural studies, curriculum development and teacher training. (www.unm.edu)
